Mindfulness & Stress Management
Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn, who first developed mindfulness in a therapeutic setting, says:
"Mindfulness can be cultivated by paying attention in a specific way, that is, in the present moment, and as non-reactively, non-judgementally and openheartedly as possible."
Mindfulness involves awareness (being conscious of your experiences), attention (focussed awareness) and remembering (remembering to pay attention to your experience from moment to moment).
When we are mindful, we live in the present moment rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. The past has gone and can't be changed. The future has yet to arrive and is unknown. The present moment - this moment - is the only moment we have.
Mindfulness shows you how to live in this moment.
Many people practice mindfulness for a variety of different reasons. Here are some of the more common ones:
- To reduce stress and anxiety.
- To deal with depression.
- To reduce chronic pain.
- To help control addiction.
- To regulate eating habits.
- To increase happiness.
- To find a deeper meaning to life.
- To boost creativity.
- To improve relationships (including with yourself).
- To train the brain.

What you can expect from mindfulness sessions...
We will begin with an assessment so that we can identify exactly what issues you are experiencing and what you would like to change.
Following this I will create a 6-8 week programme, depending on your needs. Over the course of the programme, you will learn about mindfulness and compassion and you will be assigned weekly homework tasks, which will include both formal and informal mindfulness practices.
You will attend regular sessions with me, so that I can give you the appropriate support you may need and to help you to overcome any difficulties you may face.
